A growing ideological divide within the Democratic Party took center stage this week after Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) argued that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani should not be viewed as a representative of the Democratic Party, saying the mayor’s democratic socialist platform is fundamentally at odds with the party’s traditional principles.
Speaking during a television interview on Wednesday, Gottheimer described Mamdani as a socialist rather than a Democrat, contending that the broader democratic socialist movement is attempting to steer the party in a direction many mainstream Democrats do not support.
According to Gottheimer, positions associated with democratic socialists—including criticism of law enforcement, proposed changes to the criminal justice system and other progressive reforms—do not reflect what he believes are the core values of the Democratic Party.
The New Jersey congressman also accused the movement of embracing ideas he characterized as anti-capitalist and outside the political mainstream, arguing that those views risk alienating moderate Democratic voters.
His comments came amid renewed debate over Mamdani’s stance on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Earlier this year, Mamdani said he would seek to honor the ICC’s arrest warrant for Netanyahu should the Israeli leader visit New York City. More recently, however, the mayor acknowledged that he does not have the legal authority to carry out such an arrest himself. Instead, he said enforcement of any ICC warrant would ultimately fall to the federal government.
Gottheimer dismissed the mayor’s continued focus on the issue, arguing that New Yorkers expect City Hall to prioritize municipal concerns such as public safety, sanitation and infrastructure.
“The mayor should be focused on running the city,” Gottheimer said, suggesting that issues like maintaining streets, collecting trash and improving everyday services deserve greater attention than international political disputes.
He also questioned what he described as an inconsistent approach toward foreign leaders accused of human rights abuses, noting that officials from countries hostile to the United States have also visited New York without receiving similar attention from the mayor.
Asked about the criticism during an unrelated press conference on Wednesday, Mamdani defended his position, saying his views are based on the principle that international law should apply equally to everyone, regardless of nationality or political office.
The mayor emphasized that his support for enforcing ICC warrants is not directed solely at Netanyahu but extends to anyone accused by the court of committing war crimes or crimes against humanity.
Mamdani said his position reflects what he described as a universal commitment to accountability under international law. He reiterated that he has condemned the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel as a horrific war crime while also maintaining his criticism of Netanyahu’s conduct during Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which he has previously described as constituting genocide.
He argued that preserving confidence in international institutions requires holding all alleged perpetrators of the world’s gravest crimes to the same legal standard, regardless of their position or nationality.
The exchange underscores the broader tensions shaping Democratic politics ahead of future elections, with moderates and democratic socialists continuing to clash over the party’s direction on domestic policy, foreign affairs and its broader political identity.
For New York City, the dispute also reflects how Mayor Mamdani’s positions on international issues continue to generate national attention, even as debates over housing affordability, public safety, transportation and other local priorities remain at the forefront for many residents.
