New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is once again facing criticism over his views on Israel after remarks he made about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prompted renewed attention to comments from a 2023 podcast that have resurfaced online.
The renewed debate comes after Mamdani said his administration was examining whether New York City has any legal authority to detain Netanyahu should the Israeli leader visit the city for this year’s United Nations General Assembly. The mayor also reiterated his support for the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant issued against the Israeli prime minister.
The comments quickly reignited discussion about Mamdani’s long-standing positions on Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Attention soon shifted to an interview Mamdani gave in 2023, in which he argued that many Americans view Israel less as a geographical nation than as a political concept that shapes U.S. foreign policy debates.
Speaking on the Here & Everywhere: The Solidarity Roundtables podcast, Mamdani suggested that many American politicians continue to rely on decades-old talking points when discussing Israel. He also questioned the viability of the traditional two-state solution, arguing that changing realities on the ground have made that objective increasingly difficult to achieve.
The resurfaced interview has generated a new wave of criticism from conservative commentators, pro-Israel advocates, and foreign policy analysts, many of whom argue that Mamdani’s statements reflect a broader pattern of hostility toward Israel.
Among the critics was Hussain Abdul-Hussain, a research fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, who argued that the mayor’s understanding of the conflict is shaped more by ideology than by geopolitical realities.
Several prominent pro-Israel voices also pushed back against Mamdani’s characterization of Israel, emphasizing that while Israel may represent an important historical idea for many Jewish people, it is also a sovereign nation where millions of citizens live, work, and raise families.
The controversy follows several previous disputes involving the mayor’s Middle East positions. Since taking office, Mamdani has repeatedly accused Israel of committing genocide during its military campaign in Gaza, accusations that Israeli officials strongly reject.
His relationship with many Jewish organizations in New York has remained strained. Earlier this year, Mamdani became the first sitting New York City mayor in more than six decades to skip the city’s annual Israel Day Parade, a decision that drew criticism from numerous civic and political leaders.
The latest dispute intensified after an interview published over the weekend in which Mamdani stated that he believes Netanyahu should face justice before the International Criminal Court in The Hague. The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu in late 2024 over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity connected to the conflict in Gaza. Israel disputes both the court’s jurisdiction and the allegations.
Netanyahu is expected to travel to New York in September to attend the United Nations General Assembly, although it remains unclear whether any legal action could be taken during such a visit. Legal experts note that questions surrounding diplomatic immunity, federal authority, and international law would make any attempt by a municipal government to detain a foreign head of government extraordinarily complex.
For Mamdani, the controversy highlights the political balancing act facing the city’s first months under his administration. While his outspoken support for Palestinian rights has earned praise from progressive activists, it has also intensified criticism from pro-Israel organizations, conservative leaders, and some members of New York’s large Jewish community.
With the United Nations General Assembly approaching, the mayor’s comments are likely to remain under close scrutiny as City Hall navigates an issue that extends well beyond municipal politics.
