Under the revised policy, the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) will reduce fines for minor composting infractions and focus more on education than enforcement. Residents previously faced hefty fines for improperly sorted organic waste or failure to comply with composting schedules. Now, first-time violations will result in warnings or smaller penalties, giving New Yorkers more time to adjust to the city’s expanding composting program.
The goal remains ambitious: diverting organic waste from landfills to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Composting programs have rolled out borough by borough, and with curbside collection becoming more common, city officials still encourage residents to separate food scraps, yard waste, and other compostables diligently.
The new policy also introduces free workshops and online resources to help households and businesses understand what belongs in compost bins and how to avoid common mistakes. DSNY emphasizes that while enforcement is easing, the environmental mission stays strong.
